David Shook, Director of Financial Aid

As security, I have witnessed David firsthand to offer support to a student who needed help accessing student funding because he was in need of tires for his vehicle. I asked the student and David did come through and help him. He is always selfless and exhibits real leadership qualities that I admire.

I think that we can all agree that David goes above and beyond for CMC!!! He is dedicated to everything in his life and that includes his work here at Copper Mountain College. David is always there to help out fellow co-workers and brings laughter and light to CMC daily. This week, HR needed another Manager to sit in on a hiring committee and David didn’t hesitate when asked 30 minutes beforehand. Thank you for all that you do. It does not go unrecognized!!!!

I am nominating David Shook for the Star Award. Most people do not know that the audit and reporting requirement for the HEERF funds and financial aid have more than multiplied. David never complained and took the time to make sure the auditors had the information requested, which took several days and was complicated. We really appreciate the extra effort and positive attitude.
Blanca Murcia-Alvarado, Student Services: EOPS

In the short time I’ve been an employee at CMC, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Blanca and witnessing the work she does for EOPS. Prior to me being hired for the CalWORKs program assistant position, Blanca was dealing with the day to day responsibilities of not only the EOPS department but the CalWORKs/Foster Youth department as well. She works extremely hard and never expects any praise because she just wants to do what she can to help the students that come through those programs. She’s supportive & honest with her students and quite often students will come in to talk to her and just update her about what’s going on in their life. If you ask any student in the EOPS/CalWORKs/Foster Youth programs I guarantee you they’re going to tell you about how great Blanca has been to and for them.
David Chambers, Instructional Assistant, Automotive

David has gone out of his way helping us in Maintenance with any requests we have. First of all, he is polite, courteous, very knowledgeable, and always smiling. When the tractor broke, he pulled parts and installed the new ones when they came in. Tires go out often on our work vehicles, and David always steps right up and changes them for us. He works on faculty and staff vehicles, all just for teaching the students. Sometimes he is stacked with work, and he still keeps a positive outlook in conversation and helping all of us. Just want to tell him thanks!
Sandra Segura, Education Support Specialist

Sandra goes above and beyond in everything she does. On big projects or everyday work, she strives to do her absolute best. Recently Sandra took on a new process and not only was she happy to learn but she was eager and excited. She really is a team player and wants the best for the College and brings her A-game every day. We are lucky to have employees like Sandra.

I want to nominate Sandra for the Star award because of her hard work and dedication to her position. Sandra took a position that is challenging and had a lot of turn over. She stepped up with energy and passion and has worked very hard to learn her new position and make it even more efficient. She is a joy to all who work with her. Always willing to help her co-workers, faculty and students. Even with her own family trials, she never stopped giving her very best to her position. Sandra Segura is a Shining Star to all who work with her.

The curriculum program assistant is vital in the curriculum process and Shannon consistently exceeds expectations. She is the Curriqunet liaison and assists faculty through the navigation of the system, which can be a complicated task. She manages to complete her work with diligence, timeliness and collaboration ensuring our college compliance. Shannon goes the extra mile being ever vigilant in thinking about improving processes and efficiency in operations that relate to her role. She is caring and supportive of faculty through the curriculum process and makes everyone feel supported when they have questions or ideas. We are lucky to have Shannon in this position.

This past Saturday, January 8, 2022, Counselor Alicia Mendez volunteered to staff the Copper Mountain College booth at the 29 Palms Farmers’ Market. She was not the only one to volunteer but as luck would have it, she was the only healthy one who could make it. She was FABULOUS! I was supposed to have everything set and ready for her when she arrived at 8 am but as everything goes the past two years, plans changed. Alicia showed up, was gracious and accommodating. She set up her booth like a pro, not letting anything bother her. She smiled and was friendly and even made me relax a bit! As the day progressed, she interacted with potential students, parents, community leaders even people looking for work. She was kind and helpful and what a great representative of CMC. It made me proud of our Community College. And the best part – she said she would come back monthly. This is the epitome of service and the reason CMC is a special place.

“The whole IS department is fantastic and responsive. I have singled Brian out because he is unflappable, calm, cool, and collected in the face of any and all technological snafus. One recent incident involved the new OWL technology. I logged in, got set up, and of course, the Zoom and OWL didn’t work the way I thought they should! Brian dropped everything he was doing, came over, walked me through the process and I was on my way. He even went as far as to take his lunch during my meeting to be on hand should I have any other technology issues during the meeting. I was a little shaken about being up to speed and had a board meeting in the Community Room the next week. Brian made an appointment with me to be there when I set up to make sure everything went smoothly, and because of this, I was able to handle the Zoom, OWL, and microphones with flying colors during this meeting. I appreciate him, his unruffled demeanor, his professionalism and his empathy. He is truly a STAR.”

Delores goes above and beyond for our students!
One particular student came in talking about how frustrated she was with her class and how she didn’t think she could pass it with all life’s problems bringing her down. Delores listened with compassion and patience as the student spoke about her situation in detail. She then offered words of encouragement and resources that left the student in much higher spirits! The student said, “I needed that, thank you!” This was not just a one-off occurrence. Delores is truly a blessing to our CMC community.

Sharlah goes above and beyond to help all of us, in HR and beyond. It can be a simple question or a complicated HR thing, but she is always there to help find the answer. She is readily available by text, phone, or email, at any hour to assist. She is a sounding board for issues that come up with candidates, and has assisted with all of our “what-ifs” and excessive calls about open positions. In addition to her day to day duties, which are highlighted because she does such a wonderful job, she helps with disability related issues and programs that affect non-students, and has become a master Zoomist, taking care of our All Staff Day, and special presentations throughout the year. Thank you, Sharlah, for all your hard work and helpfulness, and for doing everything with positive “can-do” attitude when most of us are calling your desk in a frantic mode!

She has networked and trained herself to be the best DE Coordinator she can be, and through her efforts has changed and impacted many on campus, so that our students and faculty can be successful.”

As our Articulation Officer, Guided Pathways Lead, Counseling Rep at Department Chair meetings, Union Rep, Academic Senate Secretary, and Athletics student contact, in addition to her work as a General Counselor, she has managed to take on all of these roles with care, thoroughness, knowledge, and collaboration. Krystal has worked with almost everyone on campus directly assisting in bringing Guided Pathways to life on our campus. What Krystal has taken on in the past few years to assist students and help move the needle for our institution is so appreciated. She is definitely a one of kind STAR!”

Shirley has been an excellent resource and a wealth of information. I have considered myself lucky to have had Shirley as a co-worker and friend. To think of one instance where she went above and beyond is difficult as this is normal practice for her. Shirley has been a star at CMC for many years and she will be sorely missed.”

Jack Pansegrau wrote: Chelsi was simply amazing! I had a crunch of non-CMC students attempting to enroll in my two real estate courses as well as former CMC students. Chelsi worked tirelessly to ensure all six of these students were able to enroll in my classes. The hurdles for a new or non-student who simply seeks to take a single continuing education course appear insurmountable and Chelsi helped each of them to overcome these hurdles. She responded to them and to me quickly and with empathy. She also displayed a high level of expertise that greatly assisted me as well as the prospective students. I could not have reached an enrollment of 20 students in Real Estate Finance and 15 in Principles of Real Estate without her help. Thank you, Chelsi.
Sandy Smith wrote: The Foundation suffered a major setback with our Admin Assistant out on leave immediately following the annual Festival of Wreaths. Chelsi stepped in to make sure wreath buyers were well cared for! She coordinated pick up of many wreaths from the Foundation Office. Her smiling face greeted one and all as she finalized transactions. She fielded phone calls, picked up mail and stayed in close contact with me about what was happening physically on campus while the staff was out. While she has only been on staff a short while, Chelsi has embraced her duties with positive energy, a fresh look and a terrific background in marketing, people and connections! She’s a CMC STAR!
Lisa Larson, Learning Management System Specialist
Recognized by: Linda Thomas: Lisa went above and beyond this semester by not only setting up every instructor’s Canvas shell but also helping instructors trouble shoot their courses when they went live. She found numerous issues that needed fixing and worked diligently with the instructors to remedy the problems. She also helped countless students who had experienced difficulties with their new courses have a more smooth start to the semester. Lisa’s hard work averted many problems and solved many more!
Jolie Alpin, Public Relations & Event Specialist

Liz Meyer said: The commitment to “Students First” could not be more exemplified than with the virtual graduation created for the 2020 graduates of CMC. Jolie Alpin stepped up for CMC, above and beyond her job description, to make this graduation happen. Within a 3-week time frame, she scripted, individually videoed, coordinated and published this memorable event for our students. Regardless of the challenges and complications for such a project, she kept the “Students First” in her focus. The CMC Graduates of 2020 will have a meaningful and memorable virtual graduation to own forever, and Jolie Alpin has earned her star for going “above and beyond” for our college. I recommend this honor for her.
Jane Abel said: In October, we made the determination to have a virtual commencement ceremony in December. Although this was a collaborative project with many wonderful individuals volunteering their time and efforts, one individual stands out in the effort and energy put into making the virtual commencement ceremony a success. Jolie Alpin graciously volunteered to be the person who put together the video that was used for the virtual commencement. She recorded each individual, spent a lot of additional time editing the video, ultimately resulting in a wonderful ceremony honoring the graduating class of 2020, who had quite the unforeseen year. Thank you, Jolie, for all your hard work, flexibility, and positivity though this whole process!

Janie Ramstorf handles all aspects of CMC’s scholarship program. There are a few scholarships – Osher, Molly Adams, Lena Pond and the Community Foundation Pooled Scholarship that require reporting to the donor organization what was given out, to who, what is still on hand and what the process is. This sounds simple but with drops and students not taking as many credits as they expect, it gets messy. Janie always maintains meticulous records, does the reports in a timely manner and is always precise. Her willingness to communicate with the funders and keep the Foundation Office in the loop is extremely helpful to us and allows us to continue giving money where it is needed – to our students!!
Kevin Cole, Director of Facilities & Operations
Nominated by Meredith Plummer. Kevin has gone above and beyond helping the County with the Covid drive through testing event. He is here at 6am making sure they have what they need and helps them get set up. The County Coordinator for this event told me how much they appreciate Kevin and all his support and what he has done for them. He had a smile (under the mask) going all day. A situation with traffic flow to the childcare center caused a panic. The employees at the childcare center were upset. Kevin was able to calm everyone’s nerves. His ability to remain professional, rational, calm and kind during the crisis and the entire event is Star-Worthy!”
